Living Fully, Not Fearfully: What Risk Has Taught Me

Home / Blogs / Living Fully, Not Fearfully: What Risk Has Taught Me
Reading Time: 2 minutes

In my role as Chief Risk Officer, I spend much of my time thinking about uncertainty, what could happen, and how we prepare for it.

But over time, I’ve come to see that understanding risk is not about holding back. It is what allows us to move forward with greater confidence.

Risk Is Part of Everyday Life

Risk is present in almost every decision we make. From the opportunities we pursue, to the responsibilities we take on. The goal is not to avoid it entirely. Instead, it is about understanding it, and making informed choices with clarity.

When we do that, risk becomes less about fear and more about awareness. And awareness that not all risks are equal, with some are worth taking, because they lead to growth, progress, and new possibilities.

Preparedness Creates Peace of Mind

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that preparedness changes how we experience uncertainty.

In insurance, we don’t eliminate risk, we manage it, and where appropriate, transfer it. Insurance doesn’t stop unexpected events from happening, but it ensures they don’t set us back in ways we cannot recover from.

When we take small steps to prepare, whether through planning, setting aside resources, or putting safeguards in place, we are better able to navigate life’s unexpected moments.

Preparedness does not remove uncertainty, but it gives us something just as important: peace of mind.

Living Fully Means Living Thoughtfully

Living fully is not about taking more risks, it is about taking the right ones.

As our lives evolve, so do our priorities. What we choose to protect, our health, our families or our future, becomes increasingly important. Understanding risk allows us to move forward with intention, knowing we have considered what matters most.

A Simple Takeaway

Understanding risk is not about avoiding life’s uncertainties, it is about being ready. When we prepare and protect what matters, we give ourselves the confidence to live fully, even in uncertain times.
